The most common reason a microwave runs (lights and fan work) but fails to heat is a failure of the magnetron. The magnetron is the core component that generates the microwave energy required to cook the food. Other possibilities include a failure in the high-voltage diode or the capacitor, which are critical parts of the heating circuit.

A complete loss of power is most often caused by a blown high-voltage fuse or a tripped thermal fuse. The thermal fuse is a safety mechanism designed to cut all power if the microwave overheats, often due to a blocked vent or a faulty cooling fan. The fuse will need to be replaced and the underlying cause of the overheating addressed.

This issue almost certainly points to a faulty door interlock switch. Microwaves typically have three safety switches that must all be engaged when the door is closed. If one of these switches fails or becomes misaligned, the circuit is broken, and the microwave won’t start or will only start intermittently when the door is physically manipulated.

Unresponsive buttons are typically caused by a failure of the touchpad itself (a worn-out membrane switch) or a problem with the control board. Continuous pressing wears down the membrane, making specific keys or the “Start” button unreliable. If the entire panel is unresponsive or shows erratic behavior, the main control board may be malfunctioning.
