Microwave Error Codes: What They Mean and How to Fix Them

Microwave error codes aren’t standardized across manufacturers — the same letter can mean different things depending on the brand. Here’s what to look for, organized by brand, plus why some of these are strictly a technician’s job.

Samsung & LG

• SE / 5E — Keypad or touch panel stuck. Try unplugging for a few minutes and cleaning the keypad first; if it returns, the control board is usually the culprit.

Whirlpool & GE

• F3 — Temperature sensor fault. A reset sometimes clears it, but a genuinely faulty sensor needs replacement — this isn’t a part most homeowners have on hand.

Panasonic

• H97 / H98 / H99 — Inverter or magnetron fault. These components store dangerously high voltage even when the microwave is unplugged. Don’t open the casing — this one is strictly for a certified technician.

Common across most brands

• F1 — Control board communication failure. Try a hard reset (unplug for 60 seconds); if the code returns immediately, the board needs service.
• E-21 / E-22 — Humidity or steam sensor error on sensor-cook models. Wipe down the interior and steam vents first; persistent errors mean the sensor needs replacing.
• dE / Err — Door latch or door switch fault. Check for anything blocking the door from closing fully before assuming it’s a switch failure.
• PF — Power failure during a cycle. Usually just needs a reset; if it keeps recurring, have your outlet and breaker checked alongside the appliance.
