Top 5 reasons your dishwasher isn’t cleaning well (and how to fix it)

Finding your dishes covered in food residue or watermarks after a dishwasher cycle can be frustrating, especially when you expect them to come out sparkling clean. Here are some common causes of this problem, along with tips to troubleshoot and improve your dishwasher’s performance.

1. Clogged spray arms

Over time, spray arms can become clogged with food particles or mineral buildup, which stops water from reaching every dish effectively. Cleaning them is simple and can make a noticeable difference.

– Remove and rinse. Most spray arms can be removed with a twist. Rinse them under warm water to dislodge any food particles. If necessary, use a toothpick or small brush to clear out stubborn debris in the spray holes.

– Use vinegar for a deeper clean. Fill a spray bottle with vinegar and spritz the spray arms to dissolve mineral deposits, then rinse with warm water.

2. Dirty filte

The filter, located at the base of your dishwasher, catches food and debris during the wash cycle. If it’s clogged, it will block water flow and leave dishes less clean.

– How to clean it. Remove the filter by twisting it out and rinsing it under warm water. Scrub gently with a brush if there’s a build-up.

Replace if worn. A damaged filter can affect performance, so consider replacing it if it shows signs of wear.

3. Overloading the dishwasher

It can be tempting to fit as many dishes as possible, but overloading can prevent water from reaching all surfaces, leaving items partially clean.

– Follow loading guidelines. Most dishwashers have recommendations for where to place different items. Avoid crowding large items near the spray arms, and keep space between dishes to allow for water circulation.

– Stack cups and bowls with space. Avoid stacking dishes in ways that block water, like facing cups down or stacking bowls.

4. Using the wrong detergent or too much detergent

The detergent you use, and the amount, can significantly impact performance. Hard water, for example, often requires a different type or amount of detergent.

– Try a different brand. If you notice residue, try switching to a high-quality detergent or using a rinse aid. Some households with hard water may need specific formulations to prevent mineral deposits.

– Aoid overuse. More detergent doesn’t mean better cleaning and can actually cause build-up. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions to avoid soap scum.

5. Low water temperature

Dishwashers work best with water heated to about 120°F (49°C). If the water isn’t hot enough, food particles may not fully break down.

– Run the hot tap first. Before starting a cycle, run the hot water at your sink for a few seconds to ensure hot water flows into the dishwasher immediately.

– Check the water heater. If low water temperature is a recurring issue, you may need to adjust your home’s water heater settings or call a professional.
