A stove can look like one appliance from the outside, but from a repair standpoint it is really several systems sharing the same cabinet. The cooktop has its own heating or burner components. The oven has separate heating, ignition, temperature-sensing and airflow systems. The electronic controls tie some of those systems together, while the electrical supply or gas supply adds another layer altogether.

That is why a complaint such as “my stove isn’t heating” does not tell us very much yet.

When I arrive at a stove or range repair call in Toronto, one of the first things I want to know is exactly what has stopped working. Is one surface burner dead while everything else works? Does the oven preheat but never reach temperature? Are all the burners clicking continuously? Does the display work while none of the heating elements come on? Did the problem start immediately after a self-clean cycle? Those details narrow the diagnosis much faster than simply knowing the brand.

Toronto also gives us almost every installation situation imaginable. We work on older freestanding gas ranges in houses that have been renovated several times over the decades, electric ranges in post-war homes with aging electrical infrastructure, modern induction units in renovated kitchens, and tightly installed slide-in ranges in downtown condos where moving the appliance without damaging flooring or cabinetry can be half the challenge.

Here is how we approach stove and range problems in the real world.

The Cooktop and the Oven Are Not the Same Repair

One of the most useful things homeowners can understand is that a failed cooktop does not necessarily mean there is anything wrong with the oven, and a failed oven does not automatically mean the entire range is finished.

On an electric range, for example, the surface elements and oven elements may receive power through completely different controls. A front burner can stop heating because its element or infinite switch has failed while the bake and broil functions continue working perfectly.

The opposite can happen too. All four cooktop elements may work while the oven stays cold because of a failed bake element, temperature sensor, thermal fuse, wiring connection or control-board relay.

Gas ranges are similar. Surface burners generally use spark electrodes and burner assemblies, while many gas ovens use a completely different ignition system. Depending on the design, the oven may use a hot-surface igniter, spark ignition system, safety valve and electronic control.

This matters because I regularly hear homeowners say something like, “The burners still work, so it can’t be the gas,” or “The display is on, so the stove has power.”

Neither conclusion is necessarily correct.

A range can have enough electrical power to illuminate the display and still have a supply, control or high-voltage problem preventing the heating system from operating.

Why Electric Coil Burners Stop Working

Traditional electric coil ranges are mechanically simpler than many modern glass-top units, but that does not mean every dead burner needs a new element.

The removable coil element itself can fail internally. If we measure it and find an open heating circuit, replacement is usually straightforward.

But one of the more important failures happens at the receptacle or terminal block where the element plugs into the range.

Over time, a loose or deteriorated connection creates resistance. Resistance creates heat, and that heat can burn the receptacle, damage the element terminals and sometimes melt nearby wiring.

When we pull an element and see a blackened terminal, pitted contact or melted receptacle, simply installing a new coil may not solve the problem. The damaged terminal block and affected wiring need to be evaluated as well.

Another common culprit is the infinite switch behind the burner knob. Despite the name, it is simply the control that cycles power to the element to regulate heat.

A failing infinite switch can produce several different symptoms. The burner may not heat at all, may only work on certain settings, may stay unusually hot even when turned down, or may cycle incorrectly.

If an electric surface element appears to stay on uncontrollably, stop using that burner until it has been inspected. A component that is no longer regulating heat correctly is not something I recommend working around for a few weeks.

Radiant Glass-Top Elements Fail Differently

A radiant glass cooktop looks cleaner and more modern than a coil-top stove, but underneath that ceramic glass are heating assemblies with their own common failure points.

The radiant element contains a heating ribbon or coil mounted beneath the glass. Depending on the burner, there may also be multiple heating zones and a temperature limiter.

Eventually, that element can develop a break in the heating circuit.

Sometimes the failure is obvious during testing. Other times a burner still heats partially because only one section of a dual or triple-zone element has failed.

That is why a customer might tell us:

“My big burner only heats in the middle.”

or:

“The outside ring stopped working.”

That is a very different problem from an element that receives no power at all.

Before replacing the element, we normally want to determine whether the problem is actually inside the radiant assembly or whether the infinite switch, relay, wiring or control system is failing to send the correct voltage.

Parts on modern glass-top ranges can be expensive, so good diagnosis matters.

A Cracked Glass Cooktop Is More Than a Cosmetic Problem

Light surface marks and scratches are common on ceramic cooktops, especially after years of sliding cookware across them.

A crack is different.

If the glass cooking surface is actually cracked, particularly if the crack crosses a heating zone or exposes the area beneath the glass, I recommend taking that section of the appliance out of service and having it assessed.

The glass is part of the appliance’s protective surface. Liquids can spill through a crack toward energized electrical components underneath, and repeated heating and cooling can cause existing damage to spread.

Cooktop glass is also not repaired the same way a chipped countertop is. We do not fill a structural crack with household adhesive and continue using it. In most cases, damaged cooktop glass requires replacement of the glass top or cooktop assembly.

Before ordering one, however, it is worth checking the price and availability. On some older ranges, the glass assembly can cost enough that replacement of the entire appliance becomes a reasonable conversation.

Radiant and Induction Cooktops May Look Similar, but They Are Completely Different

A black glass radiant range and an induction range can look nearly identical when they are switched off.

Inside, they work very differently.

A radiant cooktop heats an electrical element beneath the glass. The hot element heats the glass, and the glass transfers that heat into the cookware.

An induction cooktop generates an electromagnetic field using an induction coil and associated power electronics. Compatible cookware becomes part of the heating process, which is why the glass itself does not need a glowing radiant element underneath it.

That difference changes the diagnosis.

With induction, a “burner not heating” complaint may involve the cookware itself, pan detection, an induction coil, temperature sensor, cooling fan, wiring, power module or inverter/control electronics.

Induction electronics also generate considerable heat internally, which is why proper airflow and functioning cooling fans matter.

One of the first questions I ask on an induction call is whether the problem affects one cooking zone or several. If one zone fails while the others operate, that sends us in a different direction than a cooktop where every zone suddenly stopped recognizing pans.

And before condemning the appliance, we make sure the cookware is actually suitable for induction.

Electric Oven Problems Require More Than Looking at the Bake Element

On conventional electric ranges, the bake and broil elements are obvious suspects when the oven stops heating.

Sometimes a failed element makes diagnosis easy. It may blister, split or burn open visibly.

But elements can also fail electrically without dramatic visible damage.

And replacing an element just because the oven is cold can be an expensive guess.

A proper diagnosis may involve checking the element’s continuity, verifying that the controls are calling for heat and determining whether the correct voltage is reaching the circuit.

Modern ovens frequently use an electronic control board to switch power to the bake and broil circuits through relays. Those relay contacts can burn or fail. Wiring terminals can overheat. Temperature sensors can drift outside their normal resistance range. Thermal protection devices can open.

The symptom can therefore be misleading.

An oven that heats but runs 50 degrees too cool is a different diagnostic problem from an oven that never energizes the bake circuit at all.

Gas Surface Burners: Clicking Does Not Always Mean a Bad Igniter

Gas cooktop ignition problems are among the most common range calls we see.

When you turn a burner knob, the ignition system creates a high-voltage spark at the electrode. Gas exits through the burner ports, and the spark ignites the gas-air mixture.

When everything is clean and correctly positioned, ignition happens almost immediately.

When it does not, several things may be happening.

A burner cap that is not seated properly after cleaning can interfere with ignition. Food residue can clog burner ports. Grease can build up around the burner head. The spark electrode can become contaminated, damaged or cracked.

Moisture is another common issue.

We get calls after somebody has thoroughly cleaned the cooktop and suddenly the burners will not stop clicking. Water or cleaning solution can get around the electrode, switches or burner assembly and temporarily interfere with the ignition system.

In some cases, thoroughly drying the appliance resolves the problem. In other cases, continuous clicking points toward a defective ignition switch, damaged electrode, wiring issue or spark module.

The pattern matters. If every burner sparks when one knob is turned, that may be normal for that model. If the stove continues clicking after all knobs are off, that is different.

A good technician does not replace the spark module simply because the stove is clicking.

Gas Oven Igniters Can Glow and Still Be Bad

One of the more confusing gas oven failures happens when the oven igniter visibly glows but the burner never lights.

Homeowners understandably assume that a glowing igniter must be working.

On many gas ovens, that is not true.

A common hot-surface ignition system uses a glow-bar igniter in series with the oven safety valve. The igniter needs to draw sufficient electrical current before the safety valve will open and release gas to the burner.

As the igniter ages, it can become weak.

It may still glow orange, but if it is not drawing the required current, the valve does not open correctly. The oven may take a very long time to ignite, ignite intermittently or fail to light altogether.

This is a classic example of why visual inspection alone is not enough.

The repair has to be diagnosed according to the specific ignition system used on that range.

Other modern gas ranges use electronic spark ignition for the oven, adding components such as ignition controls, flame sensing and electronic boards to the diagnostic process.

Gas Safety: Know Where Appliance Repair Stops

Gas appliances deserve a different level of caution.

Natural-gas appliance work in Ontario is regulated, and gas control valves, regulators, supply lines, fittings, and other gas-carrying components are not a DIY stove repair under any circumstances.

There is also an important distinction between diagnosing an appliance and performing the actual gas-side work. Some stove problems involve ordinary electrical or mechanical components that any qualified appliance technician can handle. But once the work involves the gas train, gas connections, burner gas components, or related fuel-supply work, that part needs to go to someone properly qualified for it.

If you are booking service for a gas stove, tell the company that it is gas when making the appointment so the correct technician can be assigned.

And if you actually smell gas, that is no longer a normal appliance repair appointment.

Natural gas supplied in Ontario contains an odourant that produces the familiar sulphur or rotten-egg smell. Enbridge Gas instructs customers who smell gas to leave the area immediately and call 1-866-763-5427 or 911 from a safe distance. Do not operate electrical switches or electronics near the suspected leak, create a flame or attempt to locate and stop the leak yourself.

That situation gets treated as an emergency first. The question of repairing the stove comes later.

Why Gas Burners Sometimes Ignite Slowly or Unevenly

Not every ignition complaint is caused by the electrical ignition system.

The physical condition of the burner matters.

Gas needs to exit the correct ports and reach the area where the spark occurs. If food debris blocks the small ignition ports near the electrode, you may hear rapid clicking while the burner takes several seconds to light.

You may also see flame appearing only on part of the burner.

Cleaning burner components can be routine maintenance, but the burner has to be reassembled correctly. Caps that look almost symmetrical may still have a correct orientation.

If a burner has suddenly developed abnormal flame characteristics, repeated delayed ignition, significant yellow flame or another condition that does not resolve with normal manufacturer-approved cleaning, stop using that burner and have it inspected.

Do not enlarge burner openings with drill bits, needles or other improvised tools. Changing an engineered burner opening is not a repair.

The Self-Clean Cycle Can Be Hard on an Older Range

I am cautious about self-clean cycles on older ovens, particularly when a range already has years of heat-related wear.

During self-clean, oven temperatures become far higher than during normal baking.

That extreme heat is intentional because it carbonizes food residue, but it also places substantial thermal stress on the surrounding components.

We see ovens that work normally before self-clean and fail immediately afterward.

Thermal fuses and thermal cutoffs are one possible casualty. Depending on the design, excessive heat around the controls can also expose weaknesses in door-lock mechanisms, wiring, temperature sensors and electronic control boards.

The result can be an oven that appears completely dead, an oven that will not heat, a locked door that will not release, or a control displaying an error after the cycle.

That does not mean every self-clean cycle destroys ovens. Millions operate correctly. But on a ten-, fifteen- or twenty-year-old appliance with aging components and insulation, the extra temperature can be the event that pushes a marginal component over the edge.

If an older oven has already been behaving strangely, I would have the existing problem addressed before running self-clean.

Toronto’s Older Homes Add Another Layer to Stove Diagnosis

In established Toronto neighbourhoods, the appliance is sometimes only part of the story.

We regularly encounter houses where kitchens have been renovated while portions of the home’s electrical or gas infrastructure are much older.

A new-looking range might be connected in a property where the original electrical service or panel dates back decades. Older homes can also have circuits that have been altered during several generations of renovations.

An electric range is a substantial 240-volt load, commonly installed on a dedicated high-amperage circuit according to the appliance requirements and applicable electrical code.

If a stove repeatedly loses power, shows evidence of overheated connections, has supply-voltage problems or raises concerns about the branch circuit or panel, that moves beyond appliance repair. A licensed electrician should evaluate the building electrical system.

Similarly, an older gas installation may need assessment beyond the range itself if concerns are found with the supply piping or connection.

A good appliance diagnosis includes recognizing when the problem is outside the appliance rather than replacing parts until something works.

Toronto Condo Range Repairs Have Their Own Challenges

Downtown Toronto condo kitchens are a different environment.

Space is often extremely tight. A slide-in range may be fitted between stone countertops with only millimetres of clearance. Some kitchens use built-in or drop-in configurations that cannot simply be pulled forward like an ordinary freestanding stove.

We have to think about the appliance before moving it.

Is the flooring vulnerable to scratching? Is there a glass backsplash immediately behind the unit? Does the countertop overlap the range slightly? Is the power connection accessible? Is there a gas connection that limits movement? Is the unit secured with an anti-tip system?

Those details matter.

I have also seen condo kitchens where cabinetry installed during a renovation makes future appliance servicing unnecessarily difficult. A control board or cooktop that would normally be accessible can become a much larger job when trim, countertop edges or custom panels restrict disassembly.

For that reason, supplying the full model number when booking a repair is especially helpful for built-in and slide-in ranges.

Rental Properties Require Clear Authorization, Especially for Gas

Toronto landlords and property managers deal with stove problems constantly, and rental calls run more smoothly when responsibility is established before the technician arrives.

If the tenant is reporting that one electric burner does not work, the diagnosis is normally straightforward from an authorization standpoint.

Gas appliances require more care.

The technician may discover that the requested appliance repair overlaps with regulated gas work, a safety condition, an installation issue or something requiring additional authorization.

For rental properties, the landlord or property manager should therefore be reachable when the appointment takes place, particularly when the appliance is gas.

It prevents the situation where we diagnose a problem correctly but cannot proceed because the person at the property is not authorized to approve the work.

When a Stove Repair Is Worth Doing

Ranges are often worth repairing because many failures are isolated.

A burned electric receptacle, failed burner switch, broken bake element, oven sensor, surface igniter or thermal fuse does not necessarily justify replacing an otherwise good appliance.

But there are cases where we will discuss replacement instead.

That decision depends on the age and condition of the range, the cost and availability of the required part, the amount of labour required to access it and whether there are other existing problems.

A major induction power module combined with damaged glass on an older range, for example, can turn into a very different financial decision than replacing a single failed radiant element.

Parts availability is another factor. Some older premium ranges remain very repairable because components are still supported. Other units become difficult because a specific control board or glass assembly has been discontinued.

Our job is to identify the failure first. Once we know what is actually wrong, we can have a sensible repair-versus-replacement discussion instead of guessing based only on the appliance’s age.

Stove Repair Starts With the Right Diagnosis

Stoves and ranges contain enough high-current electrical components, high temperatures and, in gas models, fuel-safety systems that I do not recommend treating them as trial-and-error DIY appliances.

The symptom is only the starting point.

A burner that does not heat could be an element, switch, receptacle, relay, wiring problem or power issue. A gas burner that keeps clicking could be wet, dirty, misassembled or dealing with an ignition-component failure. An oven that will not heat may have a completely different problem from the cooktop sitting directly above it.

The goal is not simply to replace the component most commonly associated with the symptom. It is to test the circuit, identify the failed part and make sure there is not an underlying connection, installation or supply problem that caused the failure in the first place.
