Most stacked and combo laundry problems in condos come down to airflow, load size or drainage. Clean the filters, dry smaller loads and check the drain hose before you book a repair.

Condo laundry closets across Etobicoke, from Humber Bay Shores to the towers around Islington and Kipling, are built around compact appliances: a stacked washer and dryer, or a single washer-dryer combo. They save space, but they come with their own set of problems, and most of them come down to airflow, load size and drainage.

Here’s what goes wrong most often with stacked and combo units, and what you can check yourself before you book a repair.

Stacked pair or all-in-one combo? Know which you have

A stacked pair is two machines: a washer on the bottom and a separate dryer on top, joined by a stacking kit. An all-in-one combo is a single machine that washes and then dries in the same drum. They fail in different ways, so it’s worth knowing which one you have before you start troubleshooting.

Why combos take so long to dry

Most combos are ventless. Instead of blowing hot, damp air outside, they condense the moisture or use a heat pump, and the water goes down the drain. That’s slower by design: a full wash and dry can take several hours.

Load size is the other big factor. A combo can wash more than it can dry well, so a full wash load often needs to be split for drying, or the drying stage runs long and clothes come out damp. Check the drying capacity in your manual and stay below it.

  • Clean the lint filter, and the condenser or heat-pump filter on models that have one, as the manual describes
  • Leave the clearance around the machine that the installation instructions call for
  • Make sure the drain hose isn’t kinked, since the condensed water leaves through it

Why a stacked dryer needs two cycles

In a stacked pair the dryer is usually vented, and in a condo that vent can run a long way through the ceiling to an outside wall. Lint builds up along the run, especially at bends, and the dryer can’t push the damp air out. The result is long drying times, a hot laundry closet and, over time, a fire risk.

Clean the lint screen every load and check that the duct behind the dryer isn’t crushed against the wall. If drying times keep creeping up, the vent run needs cleaning; in some buildings that’s arranged through management, so check before you book. Our guide to a dryer taking too long to dry covers the airflow checks in more detail.

Leaks and drain errors

Compact washers in a closet usually drain into a standpipe or a laundry box in the wall. When that drain is slow, the washer shows a drain error or water backs up around the closet. Front-load compact washers also have a debris filter behind a small panel at the bottom front, which catches coins, hair ties and lint.

  • Clean the debris filter, with a shallow tray and towels ready for the water
  • Check that the drain hose isn’t kinked behind the machine, which is easy to do when pushing a stack back into a closet
  • If water appears under the washer, check the door gasket for a fold or a sock caught in it

If the washer still drains slowly with a clean filter, the building drain may be partly blocked, which is usually a plumbing call rather than an appliance repair.

Vibration and banging on spin

A stacked pair puts the washer’s spin under a full dryer, so balance matters. Make sure the washer is level, all four feet are firm on the floor, the shipping bolts were removed at installation and the stacking kit is secure. A load made of one heavy item, like a single bath mat, is a common cause of loud banging.

Door locks and error codes

Compact European washers and washer-dryers often show a door-lock error when something is caught in the door or the latch is worn. Close the door firmly, check the gasket for clothing and restart. If the code returns, the door lock may need replacing. For what the common codes mean by brand, see our washer error codes guide.

What’s safe to check yourself

  • Lint screen, and the condenser or heat-pump filter on ventless models
  • The washer’s debris filter and the drain hose
  • The duct behind a vented dryer
  • Load size against the drying capacity in your manual
  • The door gasket and latch area

When to call a technician

Book a repair if the dryer stops heating, the drum doesn’t turn, the washer won’t drain with a clean filter, the door won’t lock, or the machine leaks from underneath. We service stacked and combo units in condos across Etobicoke and the rest of Toronto, including compact models from Blomberg, Bosch, LG and Samsung. Frequently Asked Questions

Why does my washer-dryer combo take so long to dry?

Most combos are ventless and dry by condensing the moisture or with a heat pump, which is slower by design. An overloaded drum makes it longer, so dry about half a wash load at a time if your manual’s drying capacity is smaller.

Why do I have to run my stacked dryer twice?

Usually restricted airflow: a full lint screen, a crushed duct behind the dryer, or lint built up along a long condo vent run.

Is it normal for a combo to leave clothes slightly damp?

Slightly damp clothes at the end of a sensor cycle can happen with ventless drying, especially with mixed fabrics. Loads that stay wet point to overloading or a clogged filter.

Can a stacked washer and dryer be repaired without unstacking them?

Many repairs can be done in place from the front or the back. Some jobs need the dryer lifted off the washer first.

Who cleans the dryer vent in a condo?

It depends on the building. In some buildings management arranges vent cleaning, so check with yours before booking.
